History of Terrazzo
The history of terrazzo dates back to the mid-16th century in Venice. It was created by Venetian workers who found a way to use leftover marble stones. When combined with cement, sand and water, they created a highly durable surface. Plus, its design potential is endless. Over time, the finish's popularity continued to grow, reaching the United States in 1890. Installed by true craftsmen, it quickly became the #1 flooring choice for millions of homes and businesses.
Types of Terrazzo
Terrazzo tiles
These pre-fabricated slabs, typically 12” x 12”, are a practical and efficient option for projects that require speed and precision. They are installed with regular tile adhesive, and once dry, they are leveled and then polished, achieving a uniform and durable finish.
Integral Terrazzo
Unlike tiles, integral terrazzo is manufactured directly on site, allowing for custom and unique designs. The process begins with the preparation of molds and dividing rods fixed to the floor. Then, a mixture of water, sand, cement and marble aggregates is poured, creating a monolithic and durable surface. This method is ideal for spaces seeking an exclusive and high-quality finish.
Epoxy Terrazzo
This system combines the beauty of traditional terrazzo with the strength and versatility of epoxy resin. Although its installation process is similar to cement terrazzo, the resin base offers a greater variety of colors and chemical resistance. While cement terrazzo has greater tolerance to moisture and abrasion, epoxy terrazzo is perfect for areas with high traffic or exposure to chemicals.

Terrazzo Polishing
At Pule y Restaura, we respect the legacy left by these centuries-old artisans. We provide terrazzo polishing and installation services with great seriousness and passion.
Before going into detail, we would like to point out the following: there are many ways to maintain terrazzo. Below, we explain the 3 most common ones:

Wax
This method involves machine washing the floor, drying it, and applying several coats of wax. Although it is the quickest and cheapest procedure initially, it lasts only a short time, which means repeating the application frequently. This can result in higher costs in the long run.

Crystallized
Crystallization, also known as crystallization, involves two diamond polishing steps followed by the application of several layers of a chemical crystallizer. This product forms a surface layer that provides shine, but has significant disadvantages:
Plastic shine
Alters the natural appearance of the terrazzo.
Traps moisture
It prevents the stone from breathing, which can be problematic in areas with high humidity.
China peel effect
Excess crystallizer, which contains acid, can cause an “orange peel” effect, where the floor shines but looks like a blurry TV image.

Mechanical Brightness
Our preferred and most efficient method is mechanical polishing. This process consists of obtaining the shine naturally, using diamond abrasives in progressive steps (between 5 and 10). As you progress, the porosity of the surface is closed, achieving a dense, clear and durable finish.

Terrazzo Care Guide
To maintain the beauty and durability of your terrazzo floor, follow these tips:
01. Use rugs in the entrances
Dust and dirt on shoes act like sandpaper, wearing away the shine.
02. Dry mapo
Remove dust before cleaning to avoid scratches.
03. Neutral cleaner
Use a pH neutral cleanser (neither acidic nor alkaline) to maintain the natural shine.
04. Avoid
x Strong cleaners such as bleach, vinegar or acids.
x Dragging heavy or sharp objects that could scratch the surface.
